The Plough and Stars bar staff have fashioned Island-infused cocktails as part of the night's celebration.

Big Times. Mondo Thursdays are coming in November. I team with Doug Sherman (Superhoney/Gozu) to bring area musicians together who wouldn’t typically play with one another or in a room as unique as the legendary Plough and Stars in Cambridge. Along with Plough chef Jim Seery (who also happens to be in TRiPLE THiCK), we combine great music, great food, great drink ~ MONDO! Thurs, Nov 18 debut will feature Cropduster duo – David Unger and Chris Coughlin, Jim Healey of Black Thai with Jess Collins of Mellow Bravo, Marc Gaffney of Gozu and Keith Bennett of PanzerBastard.

Close Enough For Rock And Roll. By now it’s likely you know that Harper’s Ferry in Allston will close its doors at the end of October citing non-renewal of its lease. According to HarpersFerryBoston.com, the "400-capacity room is the size of an airplane hangar, and can be very depressing to play when it’s empty." It was reported this week that long-time Boston music promoter Don Law and associates plan to take over the 340-capacity space (that number is according to the Boston.com piece) in order to use it as “…a club that is a first step, and we think this would work so acts would then grow into the Paradise.” The Brighton Music Hall – though that is technically Allston – as its said to be called is expected to open in December. Stay tuned.

A Modern Log. The Sheila Divine is back with all-original line-up – Aaron Perrino, Jim Gilbert and drummer Shawn Sears. They began the comeback recording this month at Zippa Studios with Brian Charles funded by Kickstarter.com. To date the band has raised more than $13,000 donated by fans. As a gift of sorts, be part it and watch the writing and recording process live on the TSD Ustream. See them live Thanksgiving Eve, Weds, Nov 24 at Great Scott, Allston with The Hush Now and The Fatal Flaw.

Erin Go BRAH. Dropkick Murphys return for their now-annual St. Patrick’s Day gig series. Two House of Blues, Boston shows on Thurs, March 17 & Fri, March 18 and Sat, March 19 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Tickets for all show on-sale Sat, Oct 16 at 10am through www.livenation.com.

Sound OFF. Allston’s Sound Museum location closed up shop leaving bands scrambling for rehearsal space. Non-lease renewal was cited as the cause. Read Jonathan Perry’s Boston.com piece.

In. Congratulations to Tijuana Sweetheart for the addition of new guitarist Keri Medeiros. We can call her Keri until she is anointed with a proper TJS moniker. Keri will make her live debut in December.

Out. The Wrecking Coast is looking for a new guitar player. Interested parties can reach out via wreckingcoast(a)gmail.com. Current guitarist Pete Ferraro plays his last show with TWC on Sun, Oct 17 at 1pm at the Middle East upstairs, Cambridge.

Cheers. Boston’s RIBS scored the support slot for Helmet Weds, Oct 20 at the Middle East downstairs, Cambridge. The band appears on Boston Emissions with Anngelle Wood on Sun, Oct 17.

At 4 months old and recovering from a broken leg, she was tiny, scared and fragile. She needed a place to heal and get her strength back.

I had a great time on the panel for Rock Shop #6 with Pirate! and the Middle East Club on Monday. I was joined by many friends in radio - and my past life at WFNX! - including Carmelita, Dave Duncan, Angie C and Mark Hamilton - those last two just happened to both be in town from LA to join us. It was a great night of info sharing to help guide new bands and artists. I saw a lot of new faces and met many young bands. That is always a good thing.

As some of you may already know, our friend Ben Garceau, the former lead vocalist for Gravehaven/Roman Traffic and an all around great 24-year old guy, got in a serious accident about a month ago, and has been recovering from body and head injuries at a hospital in New Hampshire. He's lucky to be alive, and we're just glad he's still with us.

Ben, like millions of us, has no insurance. His hospital stay cost him in the tens of thousands of dollars.

About a week ago, Harper's Ferry asked us if we wanted to take the night on Saturday, August 14th at their venue. We had a gig in NYC, but the opportunity to set up a benefit for Ben trumped the trip. It was incredibly short notice and a lot of the bands who wanted to play simply weren't able to, but luckily for us the list of supporters was very long, and we've got a great bill together.

Anngelle Wood is taking the opportunity to celebrate a year of Boston Emissions surviving the death of WBCN, as all of the bands participating were either in the 2009 Rumble alongside Gravehaven and Ben or, in Streight Angular's case, a hot new Boston act that you simply must hear. Anngelle will be DJing between sets and hosting the evening.

The show will also be Steve Foster's last performance with The Luxury, as he's heading out to Portland, Oregon with his girlfriend in September.

I hope you'll all consider coming out and supporting Ben and having a great time doing it.

where I've been. A few things have contributed to my absence. One of which is a serious family illness.
It has been a tough few weeks. It's not over.

An extended hospital stay is painful for all involved. It's been an awesome (in size, not greatness) learning experience. A real eye-opener. Lessons learned: Ask a lot of questions. Question those questions. Question those questions' questions. Doctors get pissed when you question their knowledge and professional opinions.

Whether you agree or not that there's a need for health care reform, support "ObamaCare" or otherwise, I would like to hear about your experiences with health care - your own or those of a loved one.

Kansas Baptist church hate mongers pretending to be good church folk plan to picket Ronnie James Dio's weekend memorial service in Los Angeles.

In "Love Crusades" - or demonstrations they call peaceful - the same group of family members picket funerals of AIDS victims and fallen soldiers. In fact, they're so full of hate, their schedule includes synagogues (because God hate Jews too apparently), churches whose pastor's wives appear to have their own identities and schools who support gay rights.

There is little we can agree on. Though I'm willing to bet that this God they speak on behalf of is much more loving and forgiving than they are.

The zealots are coming to Boston!

Metal Horns in Heaven

Yesterday we lost Ronnie James Dio. It's truly the day the metal died.

His name is synonymous with metal, majesty and mysticism. RJD will be remembered for his style, his power, his god-like stature in metal music. Despite his physically small size, he stood 5' 4", he was a monster of rock, rivaling only Ozzy Osbourne and perhaps Rob Halford within the metal music community.

When I found out he was sick late last fall, I never considered him not beating it. He was Dio after all! By the time many of us knew the seriousness of his condition he was gone.

His career was breathed life to a whole new generation of metal fans in when Jack Black and Tenacious D payed homage to him in "Dio" - a song on their first studio record "Tenacious D" released in 2001. Ronnie appeared as himself in the D's movie, "Pick of Destiny" released in 2006.

God speed, Ronnie. I will love you always.

Oh, Conan!

I've had a thing for Conan O'Brien for years. It goes way back. I guess I'm into tall, pale, self-deprecating-yet-endearingly-genius-comedy-writers-turned-unwitting-show hosts. He's always been tops on my DVR's priority list and I'm feeling kind of traumatized in the way I'd imagine having to say goodbye to my summer camp boyfriend that I swore to love forever. I want to make a Conie pillow to make out with until I can see him again (I never did meet a boy at any summer camp or vow to love forever, nor did I ever make out with a pillow).

I've watched him from those early days in 1993, through those first few "lost years" (a.k.a. the first 3) that it took him and his staff to really find their collective groove. I loved that he was the comedic underdog and a local kid that had spent half of his life in and around Boston. And, yup, he’s quirky, he’s goofy, and he’s awesome. The past week has proven Conan to be a pearl among the network swine. And he will be the proverbial phoenix to rise from the ashes of getting royally fucked by the company he called home for 20 years. The way he walked away from this "job of a lifetime" is testament to the fact that this kid is not just some high-paid corporate suit. He is the real deal.

I'm with you, Coco. I'll wait for you.

Now, here's to hoping Jimmy can hang for a while.

We must continue to help

The republic of Haiti was devastated by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. This is a nation of already limited resources that has been battered numerous times by natural disasters - hurricanes, flooding and now a massive city-shattering quake on such an enormous scale that the thousands upon thousands of casualties are being front-loaded into dumpsters. Positive identification is not an option for loved ones, family burial is out of the question as it is both time consuming and dangerous. Watching the footage of the aftermath is unbearable. Thankfully, Americans have come forward with our hearts and our wallets to assist in what is surely going to be years of assessment and rebuilding.

I can hardly look at the faces of the children, many mother- and fatherless children. What will happen to them?

We must continue to support the people of Haiti long after this disappears from the 24-hour news cycle.

On 9/11/01, I was doing the midday show on WFNX. On my way in, it all started to unfold. I will never forget where I was when the news came. No one was prepared for the mayhem, confusion and misery that day would bring. The morning show stayed on to cover breaking news and to try to make sense of the minute to minute events while myself and others made frantic calls to town, city and state officials, the Red Cross, various news outlets, even CNN. No one was answering. If someone did, they had nothing to offer. The world as we knew it had stopped.

In the days and weeks following, people were unhinged. Having been on the radio everyday, I fielded calls urging me to tell people not to over react as Middle Eastern-appearing citizens were being harassed and attacked. I got a lot of requests for "Killing an Arab" by The Cure. I got calls from girls pleading with me to tell their boyfriends not to go into the military. It was beyond heavy. It took me years to be able to articulate anything regarding the events of that day or what I dealt with after it.

It wasn't until later that night that I actually saw clear images of what everyone was glued to all day. For that, there are no words.

I will never allow myself to not feel the enormity of that day.
It was as powerful as it was horrible. I will remember.

Now, all these years later, I still look at the news pages, still study the photos and flight plans and think of those people and what it must have been like.

Even today, I think about the woman who may have left her laundry in the washer to deal with when she came home from work. Laundry that never made it to her dryer. Or the dad who kissed his kid goodbye before a business trip out west, a dad who never dreamed it would be the last time.

I can't get into an elevator and hit a floor without thinking about the people in the towers who routinely climbed up those floors. And died there.

I will think of you.

And the families.

I did make it to the WBCN staff farewell show at Oliver's at the Cask on Friday night, 7/31/09 (albeit a little late as I was on-air at WZLX), caught up with so many from the station's days. Though I did miss many, it was great to see Ken Shelton, Oedipus (and Mrs. Oedipus), Albert O., Deek, Bill Bracken, Adam 12, Mark Hamilton, Hardy, Amy Brooks, Juanita, Cyndy Doll, Carmelita (who spent some years at "The Rock") and a few friends from my WFNX days - Meghan Goldstein and Laurie Gail!

Deek and Bill's band Age Against the Machine played while Mark Hamilton, Adam 12 and Juanita joined in with some performances of their own.

WBCN plans a multi-day on-air farewell with special guests beginning Sat, 8/8/09. This will be sad for Bostonians, and the legacy of rock radio, no matter how you feel about the current day WBCN. Sigh.

What the F**K, WBCN?!

You've read numerous articles, blog posts, texts, emails, editorials, op-eds, and notes with this news: WBCN is being retired - http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/gallery/09_14_09_wbcn

News broke publically on Tues, July 14, 2009. Though WBCN air staff knew before that public announcement, it was not common knowledge among staffers for a long period of time prior to this announcement.

Remember my DJ friends Adam 12, Hardy, Dan O'Brien, Bradley Jay, Amy Brooks, Juanita, Mark Hamilton, Bob Hannah and Boston Sunday Review producer and Boston Emissions co-hort, Shawn Clayton. They will be deeply affected. It is a very sad time for those of us who grew up with WBCN over the 41 years it brought the rock to Boston. I’ve spent a lot of time speaking with people and answering the innumerable questions this decision has presented.

The legendary WBCN is going away, to become a memory and an HD channel.

Having spent my formative years in the radio wasteland of NH, I discovered WBCN and quickly became a fan of Charles Laquidara and the Big Mattress and later the Howard Stern show, (and interestingly enough who I landed up pictured with in breaking news press, see photo above) and the latter by which - along with millions of other Americans - I first learned of the events of 9/11. If I was in the car before 10am, or 11 really, he always went late - Stern was on my radio until I started doing my own morning show at WFNX. So, it is very emotional. And we Bostonians are very sentimental.

To all who've been involved during my time at WBCN and over the years, thank you.
I'm so proud to have been given the job. It has been an amazing year.

Some good news did come out of this, Boston Emissions was picked up on sister-station WZLX and will premiere on Sunday, August 16 at 10pm. I’m on hiatus until then. I do plan to podcast via our friends at http://www.bostonbandcrush.com and http://www.bostonemissions.com/.

In the meantime, last week’s (Sun, July 12, 2009) BE with The Dirty Truckers will be posted – the very last Boston Emissions to air on WBCN.

WZLX is a great station with a big audience and loyal listeners. There is great opportunity. With new curiosity, and a familiar name attached - I've been part of its air staff for nearly 4 years - we can do great things.

THE Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble is a Boston institution, a community service of sorts and, yes, I will work on an amazing 2010 Rumble.

Thank you to those who saw fit to keep the show alive, I am immensely grateful. I feel the success of this year's Rumble and the community building we have been able to achieve has had a major affect on the show being saved.

Winning feels good among the sadness.
